New rules to protect quality

Monday, MARCH 9th 1998 - Additional rules for exporters of Hom Mali fragrant rice have been imposed by the Commerce Ministry to protect the quality of the product. By June 4, exporters must register their trademark with the Foreign Trade Department in order to get export certificates. The rice must be planted in Thailand with strains developed or certified by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, such as 105 Mali Khao, Kor Khor 15 and Klong Loung 1. The volume of amylose, the flour content, must not be lower than12% nor exceed 19%, with the moisture level not exceeding 14%.

The rice will be graded in three classes:

  1. Prime Quality - not including more than 10% of other grade rice by weight.
  2. Superb Quality - not more than 20%
  3. Premium Quality - not more than 30%

The additional rules are prevent aldulteration of Hom Mali rice, the most popular and expensive Thai rice on international markets. Fragrant rice amounted for 40% of last year's revenue from rice exports.
